Calgary FM Blogs > Jerry Steen

Jerry grew up in Winnipeg and graduated from the University of Manitoba in History & Political Sciences. It was during his studies that Jerry found his niche in radio by working part time at the university’s campus radio station. From there Jerry landed his first paying radio job in Brockville. Ontario. He was only paid in pizzas and monster truck rodeo tickets, but it was at this point that Jerry saw how rewarding a career in radio could be, and made it his life-long pursuit. After some cold winters in Winnipeg, Regina and Saskatoon, Jerry decided to at last move to Calgary where Chinooks provided at least some relief from the endless prairie winters. In 1984 he set up shop at 66CFR for a long and successful run as one of Calgary’s top morning show hosts. In 1999 Jerry decided to strike out on his own with his own business. However, after an eight year hiatus from radio he realized that being an entrepreneur was much too difficult (and almost impossible to spell) and came back to his first love, radio! The opportunity to work with the likes of Beesley and Sue Deyell was much too tempting to pass up. Also, having worked with Sue briefly once before, working with her again would afford Jerry the chance to collect the money she owed him.

Just about busted a gut...broke my spleen...laughing....real (true) ads placed in newspapers:

-For sale: Nordic Track...$300...hardly used...call Chubby

-Wedding dress for sale....worn just once by mistake...call Stephanie

    -Found...dirty white dog...looks like a rat...been out awhile...better be a big reward

I was reading the other day....one of the secrets to success, is the life-learned lesson of organisation. Truth of the matter is, some of us are better at it than others. And some of us forget over the years how to be organized. Some tips:
-Machines that are broken just take up space. Throw them away. You got a computer that doesn't work? Get rid of it (recycle). I got a cassette tape machine in my office. Know why? Me neither.

  • Pleasingly Plump

The cosmetics industry has indentified a new market....men. There's money to be made in male facial cremes, skin toners, moisturizers etc. For me, the only thing that would improve my looks would be a mask. I wear the bags under my eyes proudly, a complete set of luggage I carry with me 24/7.

How about lip plumpers? If it's good enough for women, why not we men? Don't laugh, who'd a thunk earrings would be an acceptable male fashion accessory? For women, lip plumpers pump up the lips so you look like Angelina Jolie. If you don't want Botox, lip plumpers are the way to....plump.

  • Hockey

So what's Gary Bettman's problem? He's a bright guy. Well educated (law degree from Cornell University). Lots of experience. So why is he such a bonehead? He absolutely refuses to allow the NHL to expand further in Canada.
His last bonehead move: Telling Jim Balsillie to stick to making Blackberries & stay away from hockey. Balsillie is swimming in money & wanted to buy the Nashville Predators & move them to Hamilton.  But Gary said, no...I gotta guy who's gonna buy the Predators & keep them in Nashville. So,  the guy gets the Predators. Turns out, the guy was:

  • Star$$$

Although I still go to my neighbourhood Starbucks for a cup of coffee, it really didn't surprise me when it was announced that Starbucks would be closing 600 stores.  It had gotten to the point that they were opening up stores next to their own stores.  I'm no MBA, but it didn't seem to make much sense to steal customers from yourself.

And while they re organize, maybe they could do something about the sizes. I would really like them to change the size format. I'm still not sure what a 'vente' is. And I'm sorry, but a 'tall' is not a tall....it's short & it's small.

  • Staycation

A couple of weeks ago, Phoenix did a blog on the increased cost of gas & how it's going to curtail his vacation plans. With gas at $1.30/Litre, it is way too expensive to go on a long vacation drive with the family. So, I did some research; some 'staycation' ideas. Stuff to do at home or very close to home.

I love it when Easterners try & get a handle on Stampede. For the most part, they just don't get it. 'You wear jeans to work?...for 10 days?!...doesn't your boss get upset?' The boss doesn't get upset, because he's in a coma after a mega-stampede party the night before. (And by the way, he wasn't partying/stampeding; he was networking).
