It was chaos on the Deerfoot last night, thanks to a pair of serious accidents. The first crash was a fatal one that shut the Deerfoot down in both directions for hours. Around 5:20, on southbound Deerfoot, just past 16th Ave, a 28-year old man died when his gravel truck rolled over.
Then around 8:00 on northbound Deerfoot at Peigan, a car rear-ended a tractor trailer and wedged itself underneath. A man in his 70's was trapped inside the vehicle. Firefighters say the impact was so significant that it peeled the roof off the car all the way back past the driver's side door.
Another shooting in Calgary last night. It happened near the Westside Rec Centre, and police are still investigating. 17-shell casings were found at the intersection of 69th Street and 17th Avenue southwest. Police aren't releasing many details, but do confirm that two men were hurt, one seriously. The pair drove themselves to the Rockyview Hospital after they were shot.
Edmonton police went door-to-door trying to find witnesses after a 2-year-old girl suffered chemical burns on Canada Day from a playground slide covered in white powder. It's believed the substance was Drano.

The price of Oil is now above 145 dollars a barrel. The latest spike means a barrel of crude has gone up by more than half since the end of last year, when oil was going for 96-dollars a barrel.
The Calgary Zoo's baby gorilla now has a name. Yewande (Yu-wan-day) - a female western lowland gorilla - was born May 15th. Her name was chosen from a list of more than 14-hundred who entered into the naming contest. Yewande is Nigerian in origin and means 'the mother has come back'. The zoo thought it was appropriate given the number of losses in the gorilla family over the last year. The name was submitted by Justin Brouwer of Calgary.
