Attendance at this year's Stampede is way down. More than 800-thousand people have hit the grounds this year, but that's down over 55-thousand from last year. High gas prices and the struggling U.S. economy are being blamed for a lack of American visitors. The low attendance numbers are also hurting other Calgary businesses, like hotels and restaurants -- many are now offering special deals for the final weekend of Stampede.
Police say two of the five feet that washed ashore in B-C over the past year came from the same man. R-C-M-P say there's no evidence the feet were severed, and suggests they decomposed. But, they also say it's too early to rule out homicide. The identifies of the four victims is still unknown.
Two Canadian missionaries are recovering after a vicious beating in Kenya. John and Eloise Bergen -- aged 70 and 65 -- were the victims of a brutal machete attack Wednesday. Their conditions have been upgraded from critical to serious. Authorities have arrested 2-guards who were supposed to be protecting the High River couple, and the 3-attackers.
An 18-year-old man is in custody in China in the slaying of a Canadian model. Investigators say Chen Jun has confessed to killing 22-year-old Diana O'Brien. The young Salt Spring Island, B-C woman's body was found at her Shanghai apartment Monday. Authorities say she died in a struggle during a botched robbery attempt.
With the Beijing Olympics set to begin in four weeks, China is ordering officially designated Olympic restaurants to remove dog meat from their menus. South Korea did the same thing during the Seoul Olympics 20 years ago. The move is aimed at not offending visitors from countries where eating dog meat is taboo.
And John Lennon was right. Gail Renaud has sold the original, hand-written lyrics for "Give Peace a Chance'' for about 840-thousand dollars at an auction in London. Lennon gave them to her at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal -- saying they would be worth something some day.
