The missionary couple that were brutally attacked in Kenya just weeks ago are back on Canadian soil. John Bergen and his wife Eloise arrived in Calgary last night to a group of family and friends wearing t-shirts that read ``Believe.'' The pair was running a christian mission when they were attacked and robbed earlier this month. After they recover, the Bergens plan to return to Africa.
A daring robbery, car jacking and car chase in Banff early yesterday morning. Police say there was an armed robbery at a FasGas in the town at about 2 a.m, and the getaway vehicle took off into Banff National Park. Officers put down a spike belt, but that didn't stop the thieves who drove for awhile on their rims, until forcing a man out of an oncoming suv at gun point. Police later found the suspects in the woods and charges are pending. They're also investigating because officers fired at the car during the chase.
Police are keeping a close eye on a violent offender released from prison yesterday. 28-year-old Jack Samuel Froese just finished serving time for a violent sexual assault and uttering threats. Police are concerned about the public's safety and say if Froese doesn't follow all the conditions of his release, he'll be put back behind bars.
The 88th Canadian soldier to die as part of the mission in Afghanistan was laid to rest Monday in Winnipeg. Corporal James Arnal was just 25 when he died back on July 18th. Arnal's mother said last week that she had asked him to reconsider a second tour in Afghanistan, but that he insisted on going, saying it was the right thing to do.
A four-square-kilometre chunk has broken off the largest remaining ice shelf in the Arctic. Scientists say it's the latest indication climate change is forcing the drastic reshaping of the Arctic coastline. About 9-thousand square kilometres of ice have been reduced to less than 1-thousand over the past century.
On what turned out to be George Carlin's final comedy album, he looks into the face of death, and makes it the butt of his jokes. The recording, ``It's Bad For Ya,'' comes out today. On the album, Carlin jokes that he'd been going through his address book and crossing out the dead people. Carlin died June 22nd of a heart attack at age 71.
