A Calgary cop was injured after a motorist deliberately drove towards him while he was trying to flag down a speeding driver. The female motorist started to pull over, but then in a last-minute change of mind, she drove right at' the officer with her Jeep Cheroke. It happened at Stoney Trail at Scenic Acres Link northwest around 8:30 yesterday morning.
Calgary cops say the man murdered in a southwest alley on Monday was a known drug trafficker. Police also say the shooting just before lunch hour in the Cannaught area, was likely not random. The victim has been identified as 30-year-old Efrem Mehari Kuflom. Cops are looking for the gunman, a dark-skinned man in his 20's, seen running from the area as well as a second person of interest.
The Calgary Fire Department says a portable electric fan is to blame for sparking a fire Sunday afternoon that destroyed two homes on Douglas Ridge Green southeast. Damage to the houses and their contents has been pegged at $1.1 million dollars.
Alberta's oilsands region got a surprise visit by two of the world's richest men. Microsoft founder Bill Gates and uber-investor Warren Buffett dropped in to Fort McMurray on Monday to get a better idea of what's going on up there. Canada's second-largest oil and gas firm, Natural Resources Ltd., hosted part of the men's tour at its 9.3-illion-dollar Horizon oilsands project currently under development.
Results from last year's national shoreline cleanup are raising some eyebrows. Discarded plastic bags have long been thought by many Canadians to be the biggest litter problem. That's not the case -- it's actually cigarette butts. Last year, volunteers collected more than 270-thousand cigarette butts from shores across the country.
Jessica Simpson is now selling beer. The singer and actress has signed on with the Dallas-based Stampede Brewing Company. Simpson will appear in ads in stores for the beer -- and gets a 15% stake in the brewer. Jess says that as an entrepreneur, she's ``always looking for ways to diversify her portfolio with good ideas and good people.''
